What are good health insurance companies for children?

Q. My son is going to be 18 months old on the 23rd. He was on medicaid and it ran out and was denied to get back on it because my husband "makes too much money" so we tried to add him to my husband's insurance and they said he can not be added until July which would make him 2. He is past due for a check-up and I have searched everywhere trying to find a company to give him temporary insurance and I can not find anywhere that will accept him. I only need the insurance until July when it's open enrollment.

A. As a direct result of "0bamacare" child only insurance policies are no longer available, as of Sept 2010. Children can now only be placed on a policy with a parent or guardian. There are some defined benefit plans and short term medical plans but they are not available to any kid under 2 in most states.

Sorry, You'll have to pay cash for his check-up.

How to get insurance for just my child?
Q. I am 20 and married and 5 months pregnant with my first child.

Under Obamacare I am still covered under my mother's insurance, including my maternity care. I have encountered a lot of contest via Yahoo questions, but have verified it with the doctors and insurance companies several times.

I need to have some sort of insurance for my child when he gets here. My husband will have a wonderful policy at his job, once it kicks in, but that won't be in time for the birth. What can I do as a good temporary insurance?

A. Youre right about your own coverage. Your maternity bills will still be covered under your parents plan, but it wont cover the baby. Its not easy to find coverage for children on their own plans right now, but depending on the state where you live you may have some options.

First, take a look at our recent blog post on this topic:

http://blog.ehealthinsurance.com/2012/02/childrens-health-insurance-plans-2012/

In the blog post and the chart attached to it we outline some of the issues involved in child-only coverage and provide a list of the states where child-only plans are available under certain circumstances. If you live in one of those states, contact your department of insurance to learn more or work with a licensed agent. In some states a newborn cannot be declined for coverage because birth is considered a qualifying event. You may have a limited period of time in which to enroll the baby, however.

If you cant purchase child-only coverage on your own in your state, you still may have some options. First, there may be state programs just for newborns who are uninsured. Check into that by contacting your department of insurance or the non-profit Foundation for Health Coverage Education at www.coverageforall.org.

Another option would involve applying for individually-purchased coverage for both you and the baby coverage that would kick in right after the birth. Even in some states where its hard to find child-only coverage, you can still apply as the primary applicant with your child listed as a dependent. Just be sure not to drop your coverage under your parents plan until you and the baby are approved for a new plan of your own.

Best of luck!

Can someone direct me to a legit website where I can get a comparison on various health insurances?
Q. I'm a full-time student who works part-time. I'd like to purchase a temporary insurance w/c covers for health, dental, and vision care, but I'm skeptical of entering my personal info on various websites where I'm attempting to get a quote.

Also - Is there someone who can suggest w/c health insurances are considered to be reputable, and how I can get a listing of participating providers for these insurances?

A. Nope, no such horse. No company writes in all states.

Most private dental polices cost more than they pay out. Ditto for vision. For those two, you're better off not being insured.

Your best bet, is to go to a local agent, who will tell you who's got participating providers in your area, who's got the best coverage for the lowest rates, and can compare line by line.

Health isn't like car insurance - most likely, there AREN'T 25 different companies writing health insurance in your area - more like 5-10 - wherever it is. The local guy will do you best.

Can you get temporary car insurance for say a month?
Q. I just got my car but i cant register it till next week. I got a permit to drive it but I do not have insurance, so I heard you can get temporary car insurance for a month. Im not really sure though.. HELP!

A. There is nothing like temporary insurance, its just normal insurance. Just get insurance and call the insurance company anytime to get it cancelled and pay for just the days when your car was insured. This applies to any change of policy also.

How long does it take an insurance company to issue an automobile insurance policy after receiving deposit?

Q. I've been with the same company almost five years. My car insurance is renewed every six months, after I make the required renewal deposit. Like clockwork, I receive the new payment coupons, and temporary insurance card. However, I don't get the permanent insurance card and new policy stating the value of my vehicle, until almost a month later. Sometimes longer. Is this legal? If so, why does it take so long for the agent to issue the new policy, and how will this effect me if I ever disagree with what's in the policy?
P.S. I'm not referring to how soon the new insurance is "effective", I'm referring to how soon the new policy is "received". To my knowledge, the policy is renewed immediately for six months after I make the deposit, even though I don't have the new policy, and just the "temporary" insurance card.
There has to be some type of law that gives insurance companies a certain amount of time to send out the new policy. If anyone knows please post.

A. Well for one your first payment is not a deposit. Its a down payment or first payment, a deposit would imply that the money is being put up only to hold something or until further approval and that you have some right to a refund. With regards to insurance you have no right to any monies back from your first payment unless the policy is flat canceled, and then you would be entitled to any unearned premium less any fees from that payment.

Depending on the State in which your policy is written a carrier can have up to 90 days to send you a Policy Declaration Page and Policy but this is not normal practice with most carriers. Most will try and get those to you with-in a few days of issuance of the policy or as quickly as they can. Your situation is unusual unless like someone said, the policy might be going to your agent first and the agent then has to mail it to you, but again thats a highly unusual practice. Check with your agent. It may just be that the carrier is slow to issue policies?

Take care!

How much will it cost to take my child to the doctor without insurance?
Q. I'm pretty sure my son has an ear infection. He's sleeping now, but I was planning on taking him to the doctor if he says his ear is still hurting after he wakes up. The trouble is, we've had weird complicated issues with our health insurance, and it looks like we won't be able to get that back until probably the first of December. We're currently looking into some form of temporary insurance until then, but today we don't have insurance. Any idea how much that might cost us?

A. We used to have a high deductible 90/10 plan, so even with insurance we paid cash for visits until we reached our deductible. As an established patients, a sick-visit ran us $90. If you are not established with a pedi, they will likely charge a higher new-patient rate (it was $140 for us, iirc). If you already have an established pedi fromwhen you did have insurance, that is probably your best bet. if you don't then call around to a few pedis in your area and ask what their private-pay charge is for a sick visit. For an ear infection you don't need to go to an ENT. A regular pediatrician is fine, or even a family practitioner.

You could also call our county health department and see if they offer a pediatric discount clinic. We have one here that operates once a week.

How do I get car insurance over the weekend?
Q. I just bought a car and I have 3 days to get insurance on it, how can I get insurance over the weekend? Is there a place to get insurance online? or even possibly temporary insurance?

A. There are alot of insurance places open on Saturdays now!! just not long ago I got tags, insurance, and everything on a saturday!! If there is no place in your town that is open on the weekend, then I would do it online, just do a yahoo search that has " insurance (your town)" and a list of places should show up!!

Is there a cheap way to get a thyroid prescription without health insurance?
Q. My girlfriend has a thyroid disorder and doesn't have health insurance right now. She is almost out of her prescription and needs to get the medicine immediately. She can't get temporary insurance because it's a pre-existing illness. We are considering going to Urgent Care, but I don't know if there is a cheaper way to get a prescription. Does anyone know if there is any way for her to get a cheap prescription for the medicine?

Tax rate when using a temporary insurance number? and how to claim it?
Q. I did a temporary job and it was my first job in UK (I am a foreign student). Since I did not have a National Insurance number I used the temporary one with my birth day and gender. Now I need to know the tax rate when using a temporary insurance number. Is there a possibility of claiming the amount I got taxed?

A. The temporary number has no bearing on the rate of tax, but you might very well be entitled to a refund because of the way tax deductions work. Get in touch with HMRC. If you have a form P45 from the job, the tax office you should write to will be the one mentioned on the form. Otherwise give them the name and address of your ex-employer.
