Q. im a U.S. citizen. im 16 and was just wondering if I can cross into canada with just my birth certificate and like my social security number. either flying or driving it doesn't matter. and can I cross back into the U.S. with just those documents. Thanksssssss
A. If you are traveling by air you'll need a passport. If you're traveling by land or sea you (as a 16 year old) will need only a birth certificate. This will change sometime in the relatively near future (they say summer 2009, but it could be pushed back more) such that you'll need a passport or a "passport card" even when you travel by land. For more info on this new passport card thing, go here http://travel.state.gov/passport/ppt_card/ppt_card_3926.html
Can students from canada visiting united states go to school here without a social security number?
Q. my question is that if a student who is a canadian citizen and visits united states and wants to go to high school here would that be possible? cause i am visiting california and instead of missing school i would like to finish my high school.i dont have a social security number but someone told me that u dont need to be a citizen or a permanant resident or require a social security card to go to school...is that true? please provide someinformation if u have it...thanks in advance
A. You must have authorization in the Form of an I-20 SEVIS form as would any other international student. You can not just start going to school because it is convenient for you.
What happens if i run up a huge debt in the us and move to canada?
Q. i am moving to canada permanently. from what i know, my credit score in the united states is based off my social security number, which i will not have in canada. what is to stop me from buying a new car, maxing out credit cards, etc, and disappearing to canada? do they have any way to collect? how would they possibly find me in canada and how would they collect across borders, if they even can?
i understand it will DESTROY my credit in the united states, but if i have no intention of ever coming back, i can't see the drawbacks to this.
let me add in before anybody says it. i have no family in the united states, literally NEVER intend on coming back, and have no moral conscience. i won't feel bad, i just want to know what will happen, if anything.
no coverup answers, ie
- canada doesn't want you. i don't care.
- that's a horrible thing to do. i don't care.
- you will regret it later. i don't care.
i just want to know if the united states will have any way of collecting the debt.

I live in Canada and used to live in the USA and have a social security number, can I still go back to work?
Q. I've been gone from the USA for more the 12 years now, but I still have my social security number and green card, are these still valid even after that amount of years gone?
A. Probably not, but you might be able to renew them. Contact your nearest US government office. Either a consolate up there, or if you are on the border come down for a visit. They should be able to tell you what you need to do. Good Luck. Also, be aware that things are a lot tighter than they were 12 years ago. (In terms of security, etc.) You may have to jump through some extra hoops.
