When an employment application asks if the can contact employer?

Q. I am currently working but I am seeking a different job. One of the questions on an employment application is if they can contact my current employer. I am not sure how to answer this question. I would say that it is fine to contact my current employer but I will wonder what my employer thinks of me if I want to leave there for another job. I am just trying to better myself but I just wonder if this puts me in jeopardy of losing my current job. When the question asks can they contact my current employer should I say yes or no?

A. Does you employer know that you're unhappy there?

Does your employer know that you're looking for another job?

The previous answer is right in that they may see that as a reason to cut back on your work responsibilities, but in many instances your employer won't care. This depends on the field. Also, it does always look better if you can say yes to that question, as it shows your prospective employer that you have nothing to hide.

What department usually does the hiring in a large corporation?
Q. Who should I call with a question about employment?

A. Personnel.

Do you feel like this regarding employment?
Q. I'm sure most people know how bad the economy is and more and more people out of work trying to get a employed. As I read some of the questions about employment, I am finding people answering who are insensitive to those looking for work, of course I am also finding scams and I am finding people who want to quit their jobs only because they think their boss is a jerk. I think these people should be grateful that they have jobs.
Does this annoy other people like it annoys me?

A. I hear people speak the same way and inside I say to myself, he/she would not have that attitude if they had to depend on a check from unemployment which soon may or may not come. But as far as being annoyed by it, only for the moment. If someone doesn't want to work I am not the one to convince them of that, they will soon convince themselves, hence they'll S*** or get off the pot. With that now I may be able to assist. It's not that I don't care about people, but peoples attitudes change daily and I'm hired to supervise not shrink. Things are completely different these days, and so are people.
