Can Canada Citizen living in US buy Certificate of Deposit in US?
Q. Hi,
I am a Canada citizen, and I will be in US as an international student this fall. I do not have a US drivers license and US social security number, which I found are required by many banks if you want to buy a CD
1, Can I buy CD in some US without US drivers license and US social security number?
2, if I can do that, at which bank/banks can I get the best one- year CD rate?
Thanks a lot!

A. You can obtain any financial service available to any U.S. citizen. The U.S. Internal Revenue requires you to first obtain a tax payer I.D. number so they can tax any interest you earn. You can obtain a tax payer I.D. number at any IRS office or on line at US.IRS.gov.
If you already pay taxes on earned income in the U.S., then you already have a tax payer I.D. number.
The banks set their own prices for CD's. Each bank is different and the rates change daily. You will have to call around in the area you are living in to find the best rates.

Do I need a passport to go to Canada if traveling by bus?
Q. I am planning a trip to go to Canada for a month and I was wondering if I need a passport to cross the border, or is it ok if I just have my birth certificate, social security number and ID.
A. Long story short...yes, you need a legal travel document, and probably the easiest for you to get is a passport.
According to Canada Border Services, "...If you are a U.S. citizen, you do not need a passport to enter Canada; however, you should carry proof of your citizenship..."
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5082-eng.html#s2
However, if you read the requirements for entering USA, "...Starting June 1, 2009, U.S. citizens returning home from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda, by land or sea, are required to present one of the travel documents listed below..."
http://www.getyouhome.gov/html/lang_eng/index.html
Essentially what this means is that if you as an American citizen leave your country and then try to come back in, they expect you to have a passport or one of the other "accepted travel documents". A birth certificate and SSN is just not good enough anymore.
If you don't have the right documents, you will either have to go through additional screening, or in rare cases they could not allow you back in. This is whether you are travelling by air, land, or sea.

If a person has my social security number, if I move to canada, can he still find me?
Q. can a person find you in another country if he has your social security number?
A. Did you have your SSN-Chip removed? If it's still embedded, they can trace the signal. Godspeed, brother. I hope for the best.
