Q. I am a regular employee that pays all of my taxes...ALL of 'em.
I have a boss.
He finds the jobs.
He bids the jobs.
He makes the calls on how to build stuff (I am a marine carpenter).
He pays me, and has done so steadily for two years.
I have to have liability insurance.
If I get injured, I think I'm screwed...I have no personal insurance.
How good of a deal is he getting by paying me as an independent contractor?
And again, is this legal?

A. he's saving on Social Security, medicare, federal taxes, state taxes, and biggest, and most importantly, insurance, both liability, and workers comp.
It's legal, if you can honestly be described as an independent contractor.
to check up on this, visit the posted website I'm included, and try to determine if you're an employee or a contractor.

A. They'll have you fill out a family history form, take about a million vials of blood from you at the lab, fill out insurance papers, last period, who the father is, but they didn't ask me about testing until later in my pregnancy (Personally, I refused because I'm having this child that I will love regardless of any diseases they can screen for), drug/alcohol/tobacco use, and just be honest. Nobody's mad, nobody's going to rat you out. But if you lie, it could harm your child. They'll give you a scrip for prenatals, too.
Personal and public liability insurance - Is it possible to get a combined policy?
Q. I'm about to set up a small sole trader business in the UK making furniture and I am going to be moving into a small industrial unit which I will be renting. I have been advised by the people who are renting out the unit that I need to get personal and public liability insurance. I have done a few searches on the internet but I can't see any companies that have a combined policy. In other words it seems I have to get two seperate insurance policies for personal and public insurance. Is this right? Or is it the case that public liability also includes personal liability.
A. OK, I filter to US Only questions (not english only) and this came up, so I'm guessing that maybe you're not going to get many UK answers.
Here in the US, and most of the rest of the world, it's true - there are TWO different kinds of liability - personal, and business. "Public" is a misnomer - public can be either personal, or business. Or maybe it's just a UK way to say 'business'.
But, you CANNOT combine the two. The rating basis and coverages are WILDLY divergent. Business liability does NOT include personal liability, but it DOES extend coverage, to some extent, over employees IN THE COURSE OF EMPLOYMENT. With exclusions, of course.

How many questions do i have to get right on the Personal Lines Insurance exam in order to be licensed?
Q. I'm taking my test on thursday in california and i'm terrified i wont pass. I was told the test is 90 questions and i just wanted to know how many i needed to get right in order to pass.
A. You need to get a 70%.
If you can't figure out 70% of 90, you're definately not going to be able to calculate the coinsurance penalty questions that will be on the exam.
